Celtics' Joe Mazzulla was snubbed for NBCA Coach of The Year

Mark Daigneault has been voted as the NBCA's Coach of The Year for 2024.

He led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a first-seed finish in a tough Western Conference. He has also overseen the development of a rebuilding Thunder team and now has them positioned as genuine contenders for the NBA championship.

However, Daigneault did not lead his team to the best record in the NBA. That feat was achieved by Joe Mazzulla of the Boston Celtics.

The knock of Mazzulla will undoubtedly be that he had a more talented team, that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are All-NBA wings with vast playoff experience and the additions of Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday this past summer tipped the scales in the Celtics' favor.

Yet, Mazzulla managed to balance his roster. Not only did he get exceptional performances out of everyone in his rotation, but he got them to sacrifice.

He got a team full of All-Star talent to take a step back in production. He sold them on the dream of being a complete team that plays for each other. Then, he guided them to a 64-18 record.

Boston never lost more than two games in a row. It developed Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser and Luke Kornet throughout the season. It implemented a robust offensive and defensive system.

All of that led to a league-leading Net Rating of +11.7. The Thunder were second with +7.3.

Mazzulla's Celtics dominated. That means Mazzulla dominated.

Daigneault winning the NBCA Coach of The Year award over Mazzulla is a significant snub.

Perhaps Oklahoma's record is more impressive due to the depth of the Western Conference. However, that isn't something that was in Mazzulla's control. Boston beat the teams that were put in front of it.

Nevertheless, Mazzulla will likely have his eye on a bigger prize: the Larry O'Brien trophy. If his team can secure its first championship since 2008, he will have the last laugh and have the start of a legacy to go with it.
